25th Annual Brockville and Area Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Brockville & Area Sports Hall of Fame grows by 10.

 

Tuesday night – the Brockville & Area Sports Hall of Fame Committee voted and elected 10 members to the hall in this the 25th year.

 

In the pro category: 

 

Andy Stewart - Played with the Brockville Bunnies and then went on to get a short stint with the Kansas City Royals.  He also played for Team Canada, was a Toronto Blue Jays bullpen catcher and the one who pitched to Carlos Delgado at the Home Run Hitting contest at the All-Star Game.

 

Lawrence Fox – an outstanding fastball player with the old Brockville Diggers.  He was known as Scoop for his outstanding defensive play at Third base.

 

Cory Rasenberg Fox – an all-round athlete in track and field and the pentathlon at the University of Western Ontario.  She was into their Hall of Fame 

 

Bob Mills – Founder and driving force behind the Rideau St. Lawrence Kings AA Midget Hockey Association.  Along with Jacques Martin, former Coach of the Ottawa Senataors, founded the 3S (systems, skills and skating).

 

Wally White – A long time successful coach, manager, executive member and participant in a variety of sports.  He coached senior Boy’s high school football and basketball for over 30 years

 

The Committee also elected 5 members prior to 1940

 

Craig Swayze – Brockville Rowing Club

 

James Roderick Maclaren – Brockville Rowing Club

 

Jo-Jo Graboski – Brockville Magedomas Polish Flash – offered a contract with the Chicago Black Hawks but because he only had one eye, the league wouldn’t allow it

 

Albert Charles “Dubbie” Kerr – Brockville’s Forgotten All-star – a member of two Stanley Cup Champion Teams with the Old Ottawa Senators

 

Ed Brown – for 75 years he taught baseball to youngsters in Prescott.  There is a Ball Park named after him in the fort town.

 

The committee also selected the nominees and winners in the other categories

 

Brian Purcell of South Grenville is the Recorder and Times Coaching award winner.

 

Steve Polite of Prescott and Peter Hickling of Athens will share the Investor’s Group Volunteering Award

 

On June 8th at the Kinsmen Sports Awards Dinner, all attendees will vote for the Sports Person and Team of the year.

 

The five nominees for Sports person are:

  1. Lucas Woodhall – Discus and Shot Put
  2. Christopher Dang – Power Lifting
  3. Ashley Connell – University Champion in shot put and indoor hammer
  4. Sarah Cushing – Golf
  5. Cameron Locke – Swimming

 

The five nominees for team of the year are

  1. Brockville Midget Blazers Basketball
  2. Rideau St. Lawrence minor Bantams Hockey
  3. Athens Aeroes Hockey
  4. Upper Canada Swim Club
  5. TISS Midget Track and Field

 

The Sports Hall of Fame weekend is June 8 – 10th.  Tickets for the Kinsmen Sports Awards dinner will be on sale next week at Quickie Post Office in the Kensington Plaza; Flowers Brockville in the Kent Plaza; Brockville Smoke Shop, Downtown and Young’s of Prescott.  The cost is $30

 

Friday June 9th is the Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Brockville Memorial Centre at 5:30 pm.  The weekend concludes with the SG Wells Ford Hall of Fame Golf Tournament in Prescott.  Golfers should sign up at the Prescott Golf Club
