AUDIO: Looking At The Books Only One Piece of the Puzzle, Says Drake

Editors Note: We have invited each of the candidates for mayor in Brockville to join a live in-studio discussion on the Hot Topic this week to discuss their platforms.

Advanced voting begins on Monday in the Brockville municipal election.

A major issue heading into this election has been the Aquatarium, and the $2-million dollar fundraising shortfall at the Brockville Tunnel.

Speaking on the Bruce Wylie Show with Kimberley Johnson, Cec Drake says if he's elected mayor, he would zero-in on the city’s finances.

"We need to develop a five year financial plan that includes a capital spending plan," he says. "With a goal to reduce the debt, increase the reserves and reduce the debt payments."

Drake says he will ask council for "proper reports and controls" during projects.

But he says fiscal responsibility is only one piece of the puzzle.

The city must be supporting small businesses and investing what we currently offer, says Drake. On top of that, large industries can come through new ideas.

He thinks the city should be diversifying to make the city stand out against areas like Gananoque.

"You want to come here for entertainment, you need tourist attractions, different things to do," says Drake. "Our restaurants could add support. People could come for health care, and spend the day."

He says one of his dream projects is to start work on a multi-use recreational facility that can be used for national and even international events.

"Our location has huge potential and we should be taking advantage of it."

Kelly Cole, Jason Baker and Mark Oliver are also running for mayor on October 22nd.
