Funnel Cloud, Power Outages Following Storm Saturday Night

Funnel Cloud over Mallorytown

A scary sight as a funnel cloud in the Mallorytown area appeared for highway drivers on Saturday night.

Around 6:30 pm - Environment Canada suddenly switched from a Severe Thunderstorm Watch to a Tornado Warning for Brockville, Gananoque, and Kingston.

Officials warned of hail as well as winds that could reach 100 km/hr.

But as Meteorologist Sherry Williams explains, they've see no evidence of one touching down.

"We have not had any confirmed tornados," she explains. "We have seen videos and pictures of funnel clouds, but we haven't had a confirmed report of a tornado."

Just under 6,000 residents in areas like Kemptville, Athens and Augusta were left without power after the storm passed, due to fallen tree branches.

Williams says they do keep track of things on radar, but when it comes to actually determining whether a tornado has affected the area, that's based off information residents send them.

"We don't know there's a confirmed tornado, until we've seen videos of damage or videos of tornados," she explains.

If they do believe they’ve come across evidence, Williams says that’s when officials will send someone to view the damage and do a survey of the area.
