Public Meeting Planned For Closing BMO Lansdowne
Concerned customers of the closing Bank of Montreal in Lansdowne will get a chance to speak with banking officials next month.
BMO has announced the branch will close on October 19, 2018, and merge with their Gananoque location.
Leeds and the Thousand Islands Mayor Joe Baptista says he's shocked that a bank that's been there for 120 years is closing its doors.
"We use the Bank of Montreal as our bank and that was part of a conscious effort by the municipality to make sure that we supported our local branch," he says. "When you look at the number of clients it would be hard for that branch to be profitable. That's what we don't understand"
Baptista thinks this is part of a large issue with large banks, he says he's heard from residents regarding the announcement.
"What they need to do, with the banking industry period, is they need to have a much more rural lens," he says. "If they say they want to be part of a community they really need to be in the communities they serve."
BMO officials will hold a public meeting to discuss the move on May 8, from 7pm until 9pm, at the Lansdowne Community Hall.
