Board officially votes in favour of closing Rideau High

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has voted in favour of closing Rideau High School.

Staff reports said the low enrollment at the school meant students could not be offered the variety of courses they deserve.

The final vote followed hours of passionate testimonies Tuesday night, but those were not enough to save the school from closure.

Senator Vern White, a former Ottawa police chief, told the meeting he's seen what the high school has done for the community.

"I've seen the positive impact and growth that we've seen within that community, and I truly believe that the closing its high school will have a negative impact on the youth from that community," White told the meeting.

Rideau's students will be moved to Gloucester High School, and the board says a name change is a possibility.
