UPDATE: Dash cam captures shocking crash between car and cyclist
Shocking dash cam footage captures the moment of impact between cyclist and a car in the downtown core.
Nick Fleury was driving in the area of Laurier and Lyon Street Saturday around noon when he said a cyclist running a red light collided with a car driving in the opposite direction.
"After the video cuts, we hopped out of the vehicle to call the police and see if everyone was ok," he said. "However by the time I pressed the button to save the video and got out of the car, there was already a police officer on scene."
The cyclist has been identified as 30-year-old Alexandre Remi Baril-Picard, of Gatineau.
The dash cam video captures the moment of impact, which may disturb some viewers. The video also contains graphic language.
Fleury said a police officer in an unmarked vehicle witnessed the entire incident.
Lucky, Fleury said the cyclist walked away from the collision with just a sore hip. Paramedics treated him at the scene, but the man refused transport to the hospital.
"He had a very sore hip and leg from what we saw," Fleury said. "The paramedics checked him out and released him quickly."
Cycling advocate Alex DeVries said called video "obviously disturbing."
"Anytime you see something like that it's pretty horrifying," he said. "I think that a lot of people are in too much of a rush, stopping for yellow lights, stopping at stop lights and stop signs, and yielding, that would make a big difference."
When asked what tips he had for drivers and cyclists, DeVries had a simple answer: follow the rules of the road.
"Just obey the rules of the road, primarily with yielding and right of way, that means traffic signals, right turns, things like that."The collision happened at the same intersection where last year 23-year-old Nusrat Jahan was killed when her bike was struck by a dump truck turning right. The driver of that vehicle was charged.
Baril-Picard has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to stop at a red light.
