Overall Gatineau crime number barely moves in 2016

Gatineau's Police Chief is preaching stability as the service's annual report was presented Tuesday.

The overall number of crimes barely moved in Gatineau in 2016, as the number from 2015 dropped by only two to 10,793.

Chief Mario Harel points out this is despite an increasing population. He says sustained efforts to combat crime and make roads safer are bearing fruit.

There are positive numbers including - for the first time since 2001 - zero homicides.

There were also drops in threats (-15%), criminal harassment (17%), armed aggression (-8%), and common assault (-2%).

However, serious assaults more than doubled. There was a 120% increase.

Instances of sexual assault and sexual extortion grew by 5% and 6% respectively, but the service says those climbing rates have slowed.
