UPDATE: One man confirmed dead following bus crash on 401 near Prescott
OPP have confirmed one person has died, following Monday's bus crash on Highway 401 near Prescott.
Police say the victim is a 54-year-old man from China.
Four people remain in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The tour bus, traveling from Ottawa to Toronto, careened off the roadway and into a ditch, hitting a rock cut at around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
Speaking to investigators, the driver of the coach said the wheels had seized up and the sterring wheel locked, causing him to lose control.
The westbound lanes of the 401 between Edward Street and Maitland Road were closed for hours as police, ambulances, and helicopters arrived to tend to the victims. Lanes have since reopened.
There were 37 people on board the bus, most of whom were Chinese tourists - other than a tour guide and the driver - who did not speak English.
At least 24 passengers were initially reported injured, including at least four of them with life-threatening injuries. They were transferred via Ornge air ambulance to the Kingston hospital. The other 20 passengers were taken on a school bus to the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
