Bernier launches People's Party of Canada

We now know what Quebec MP Maxime Bernier is calling his new political party:

Today Bernier announced the creation of the People's Party of Canada, or PPC for short.

The MP left the Conservative party in August amid ongoing tensions with leader Andrew Scheer.

In a statement today he said, "It is time to put the power back in people's hands. For too long Canadian politics has been hijacked by interest groups, cartels, lobbyists, and international organizations, corporate or union interests and the interests of politicians and bureaucrats in Ottawa who are disconnected from ordinary citizens."

Critics worry that the new party will split voters on the right of the political spectrum.

Bernier says he'll be registering the party with Elections Canada in the coming weeks.
