Council votes to change the name of IceDogs Way
After two years of discussion, IceDogs Way in St. Catharines will be no more.
Councillors voted to change the name of the road during last night's meeting after a deal with the owners of the hockey team, Bill and Denise Burke, fell apart.
Back in 2017, the Burkes pulled out of a $1 million dollar naming rights agreement after a disagreement with the city.
The Burkes wanted naming rights in perpetuity as per a 2014 agreement, but city staff eventually only offered the pair the rights for 20 years.
Eventually, city officials tried to honour the original agreement but by then it was too late, and the Burkes had already moved on.
The official sign won't come down until the city decides on a new name for the street.
