Demolition set to start at old General Hospital in St. Catharines
It's happening! The old General Hospital in St. Catharines is finally about to be demolished.
The derelict building closed in 2013 and has been the target of vandals and trespassers ever since.
Mayor Walter Sendzik says there are a few things that have to be done before the first wrecking ball takes a swing at the building.
That includes mitigation and pest control plans and an overall demolition plan.
Two local companies secured the bid to demolish the building and are now working with the owner of the property.
Sendzik says they are also working with social agencies to find housing for the those who are squatting in the building.
The mayor calls this the first step in revitalizing and redeveloping that area of St. Catharines.
