Harrowing story from man trapped in flooded Toronto elevator

A man trapped in a flooded elevator in Toronto says he was mostly thinking about his daughter as water levels rose to his neck.

Klever Freire  and a co-worker punched out a ceiling panel so they could get a cellphone signal to call 9-1-1 when the elevator flooded during an intense rainstorm last night.

He says they believed they only had five minutes left before becoming submerged.

They were pulled to safety by police officers who swam through the floodwaters to use a crowbar to pry open the elevator doors just in the nick of time.

Freire says the half hour they were trapped felt much longer while the two officers say they were excited and happy to save the men's lives -- which is what they signed up to do.
