IceDogs Overcome By Attack
Kirill Maksimov netted his second straight hat-trick but it wasn't enough as the IceDogs lost a hard fought battle 6-4 to Owen Sound. Dave Bell's Dogs fought back from a two goal first period deficit to take the game down to the wire.
Ben Jones opened the scoring early in the first with help from Aaron Haydon and Johnny Corneil before the OHL's number one power-play would strike three straight times in an opening period where the visitors held a 20-5 shots advantage.
The second stayed scoreless until Maksimov found the back of the net on an IceDogs power-play at 13:59. Ryan Mantha and Akil Thomas picked up assists. His second of three came at 15:22 with a hard work assist from Justin Brack and Drew Hunter. The Dogs outshot Owen Sound 16-12 in period two.
In period three, the Attack would score in the first minute and just before the eight minute mark to again take a two goal advantage. Oliver Castelman and Justin MacPherson helped set-up Kirill Maksimov's third goal with just over five minutes to go. His 18th again made it a one goal game but the home side could not get the equalizer. An empty net goal with under 13 seconds left made it 6-4 Owen Sound. The final shot count read 46-29 in favour of the attack.
Tied for the eighth and final playoff spot, the battle of the dogs is renewed Friday night as the IceDogs host the Hamilton Bulldogs. 610 CKTB will be there with the pre-game show underway at 6:30.
