More children are being hospitalized with the flu in Niagara this year

More children are being hospitalized with the flu in Niagara this year.

Acting Medical Officer of Health with Niagara, Dr. Mustafa Hirji is encouraging residents to get their shot as we are about a third of the way through flu season so far.

He says while they don't have an official count of confirmed cases, there are outbreaks at long-term care homes in Niagara.

Dr.Hirji says more children are being hospitalized with this year's dominant strain being H1N1.

That's the same flu virus that killed 50-million people in the pandemic of 1918.

Hirji says this is the time to get the shot with the peak of flu season arriving shortly.

He says the flu shot does save lives and if you haven't had a flu shot yet, it's not too late.
