NDP leader says she’s horrified after Oosterhoff speaks at anti-abortion rally

Reaction has been swift after a local politician took a hard stance on abortion.

Yesterday, Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff attended a pro-life rally at Queen's Park, declaring 'We pledge to fight to make abortion unthinkable in our lifetime.'

He was joined by fellow PC MPPs Christina Mitas from Scarborough Centre and Will Bouma from Brantford-Brant.

When asked if he supported the declaration from his MPPs, Premier Doug Ford threw the question over to the Energy Minister who sidestepped the question completely, speaking instead about the carbon tax.

Along with the public backlash, NDP leader Andrea Horwath has put out a statement saying, "Every woman has the right to make decisions about her health care, her family, and her body, including the decision to seek a safe medical abortion. Sam Oosterhoff and Doug Ford have no right to attack that."

She says she is horrified that Ford continues to refuse to denounce his MPPs’ dangerous, anti-choice and anti-women position.

Before 1969 all abortions were illegal in Canada, but a Supreme Court decision in 1988 ruled those laws unconstitutional.
