Need in Niagara increases ahead of 14th annual Walk A Mile in support of Gillian's Place

Gillian's Place is getting ready for Niagara's 14th annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes.

Men are invited to strap on a pair of heels and march around the Pen Centre on October 19th to show support for women and children facing violence and raise funds for the shelter.

Director of Development and Violence Prevention Programs Nicole Regehr says the need for services at Gillian's Place is increasing.

"We answered over 3,000 crisis calls last year, which is up about 50% from the previous year. We sheltered 308 women and children and we served another 1,800 through outreach services."

Over the past 14 years, hundreds of men have answered the call.

"I think we're living in a time when it's increasingly important for our male allies to publicly take a stand and publicly stand with women." Regehr tells CKTB's Tim Denis. "I know there are still many, many out there who are silently supporting us, and we want to meet you!"

This year's goal for Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is $135,000.

Registration is available online.

CKTB will be talking to the Walk A Mile Ambassadors in the lead up to the big event.
