Niagara River Lions sign multi-year agreement with Meridian Centre

The Niagara River Lions will continue calling the Meridian Centre home for the next few years after reaching a lease deal.

The Canadian Elite Basketball League announced the multi-year agreement with SMG Canada yesterday; the team joined the league in June after playing in the National Basketball League of Canada for the past three years.

CEO of Canada Elite Basketball League Mike Morreale says they wanted to continue the good will already set down by the River Lions.

"They have their community outreach, they have the fans and the fan base that have been supportive of them. And they want the good will in the community to continue. It was an easy decision to remain in Niagara and it was an easy decision to have them be one of our premiere franchises."

Morreale says they want to encourage fans to join in the whole experience, not just the game itself.

"They idea is to get people to the venue early, have them experience the sights and sounds of what we're doing outside the venue first, come inside for a quick, fast action game with lots of excitement and entertainment, and then post-game head back out to the community and enjoy downtown St. Catharines and all that has to offer."

The Canada Elite Basketball League's inaugural season tips off in May of next year.
