OBIT | Peter Mayhew, known for his work in Star Wars, dies at 74
He never said a real word in the role he is most famous for, but fans are mourning the loss of the actor behind our favourite 'big walking carpet.'
Peter Mayhew originally played the iconic role of Chewbacca, Han Solo's Wookie co-pilot and loyal friend in the Star Wars franchise.
Last night his family took to social media, saying the 74 year old died at his home in Texas on April 30th.
Mayhew played Chewie for most of the franchise's history, even fighting his way back from being wheelchair bound to don the fur one last time for The Force Awakens.
In recent films, the role was passed on to Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo but Mayhew stayed on as a consultant.
Suatamo took to Twitter last night saying, "He was an absolutely one-of-a-kind gentleman and a legend of unrivalled class and I will miss him."
Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, also expressed his condolences, calling Mayhew 'the gentlest of giants. A big man with an even bigger heart.'
Fans are planning special events to honour his passing during tomorrow 'May The Fourth' celebrations.
Mayhew's family asks that anyone wanting to honour his legacy donates to the Peter Mayhew Foundation.
