Ontario legislature could create new position honouring Gord Downie
The Ontario legislature could be creating a new position to honour the memory of Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie.
New Democrat Percy Hatfield introduced the Poet Laureate of Ontario Act (In Memory of Gord Downie) yesterday.
Downie, who died earlier this year after a battle with brain cancer, is widely remembered as a singer, poet, and advocate for Indigenous issues.
The poet laureate would be responsible for writing poetry which would occasionally be used in the legislature. The position may also include visiting schools, presenting or arranging poetry readings, and assisting with writing workshops and other activities.
