Out of the Heat volunteers celebrate successful 2019 launch in St. Catharines
The folks at the Out of the Heat emergency shelter in St. Catharines are celebrating a successful launch to the season.
Around 20 people were using the shelter around midnight last night as a safe, cool refuge to sleep and grab a bite to eat.
One of the founders, James Mattiazzo, believes the shelter will likely hit capacity in the coming weeks.
Last year the shelter had 35 beds but frequently stretched to offer help to 40 people. This year, they have 40 beds, but expect the numbers to go over a little bit.
Mattiazzo says the community has really rallied to the cause.
"We just had a fundraiser and we were able to raise enough money to cover our operating costs for the summer. We could always use food donations as well."
Volunteers are still needed, particularly for overnight shifts.
Out of the Heat runs 8 p.m until 8 a.m. seven days a week out of St. George Church on Raymond Street until the end of August.
