Senior rescued from Welland Canal
Luck was on one man's side after he fell into the icy waters of the Welland Canal.
On Friday, a Thorold senior was walking his dog along the canal when his dog strayed too close to the edge according to The St. Catharines Standard.
While trying to bring the dog back to the path, the man took a three meter tumble and became partially submerged in the water.
Thankfully, his phone did not land in the water and he was able to call for help - incredibly, a group of trained ice rescue instructors happened to be at Thorold Station Number One when the call was made.
The paper reports the man was in the water for about ten minutes before rescuers arrived.
Emergency crews formed a human chain, pulling the man back to safety where he was treated by paramedics.
