Staffing issues meant no RIDE checkpoints in Niagara New Year's Eve
If you were out and about New Year`s Eve in Niagara, you may have wondered why you didn`t see any RIDE spot checks set up?
Well, it turns out due to staffing issues, Niagara Regional Police were unable to set up the spot checks.
Chief Jeff McGuire says there has to be a minimum number of officers out patrolling roads in cruisers and he can't pull them to staff RIDE checkpoints.
Police Services Board chair Bob Gale concurs, noting they are under budget constraints and are governed by the contract with the Police Association.
Gale points out the contract states the mimimum coverage for officers in different communities and that comes first.
But the chairman says the issue will be addressed at their next board meeting.
