Starting today, emergency alerts will be sent to your cell

Today is the day cell phone providers will begin sending emergency alerts to your phone.

No longer will the alerts be solely broadcast on radio or TV.

In the case of a life threatening emergency, officials with Alert Ready will send a bilingual message to your phone.

An alarm will also sound.

The alerts will be sent out in the case of terrorist threats, natural disastors, or Amber Alerts for a missing child.

The CRTC says wireless carriers will conduct one test of the system during the week of May 6th.
