The dilemma of paying for a new Forks Road Bridge in Welland
Who should pay for the new Forks Road Bridge in Welland?
General Manager of Infrastructure and Development Services with the city of Welland Erik Nickel says it's a difficult decision financially and they are looking at all options.
He says one of the options they are looking at is installing a causeway.
Welland is applying for Federal funding to replace the bridge, hoping they can get 5 million dollars which would come close to covering the cost of a causeway.
A causeway is a raised road or track across low or wet ground.
Nickel says an environmental assessment would be needed to see if that's an option.
The cost of replacing the bridge entirely is around 13 million dollars.
The bridge was closed in October for public safety reasons city staff found the structure was deteriorating faster than anticipated.
