UPDATE | Family pet killed in house fire in Welland

A family pet was killed during a house fire in Welland on Barrinton Drive.

The family did manage to escape with one other animal after being awoken by smoke alarms this morning, though one member of the family was treated at the hospital in Welland for smoke inhalation.

Deputy Fire Chief Adam Eckhart says the blaze sprung up quickly in the northern end of the home.

"We had some of our staff coming in on shift change who live in the area, and had been in the area 15 - 20 minutes earlier and there was nothing visible."

Eckhart also gives credit to the neighbours; the department received multiple calls from concerned citizens after the fire broke out.

Around 30 firefighters arrived on scene to knock down the blaze.

A damage estimate is not available at this time and investigators continue to search for a cause.
