Welland mom at centre of Amber Alert given conditional discharge

The Welland mother at the centre of a high profile custody battle has received a conditional discharge after pleading guilty to breaching a family court order.

Alana Haist made headlines after an Amber Alert was issued when Haist fled Niagara with her daughter in December of 2016 in the middle of a custody battle with her ex husband.

A Canada wide arrest warrant was issued and the pair were found a few days later in Hamilton.

The custody battle began in Egypt where Haist had been living during her marriage.

She fled the country with her daughter despite a court order she could not take the child out of the country.

After locating the pair in Ontario, her ex husband then filed child custody proceedings here.

After a local judge ruled earlier this year, the Ontario courts had no jurisdiction in the custody case,  Mohamad Abdel-Motaleb returned to Egypt with his daughter .
