Welland residents forced from home after bedroom fire
A stark reminder to install smoke alarms after a Welland resident discovered their bed on fire.
Thankfully, all residents of the home were able to escape the Wallace Ave house just before 5 a.m.
Officials say they were lucky to escape unharmed; the residents had recently bought smoke alarms, but none of them had been installed yet.
Although crews were able to confine the blaze to one bedroom, the residents were not able to return home. The damage cost is expected to come in around $20,000.
Investigators are tracing the cause of the fire to careless smoking in bed.
