Woman struck and killed on 401 after earlier minor crash

Police say a 31-year-old woman is dead after a late-night collision on Highway 401 in Toronto.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says it appears the woman was struck while trying to cross the highway on foot after being involved in an earlier collision.

In a video posted on Twitter this morning, Schmidt says the initial crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. on the westbound 401 between Markham and McCowan roads in Scarborough.

He says the first collision was ``relatively minor'' and involved two vehicles, one of which was hauling a small U-Haul trailer.

Schmidt says the driver of the other vehicle, a woman from Toronto, got out of the car and attempted to cross the highway on foot but was struck by another vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
