Balsam Lake Oil spill

People who draw water directly from the South Bay section of Balsam Lake are being urged to use bottled water for drinking until further notice after a fuel oil spill late Sunday afternoon.

About 100 properties along parts of Romany Ranch and Killarney Bay Roads are affected.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit says, due to the nature of the fuel spill, boiling the water is not effective.

The Health Unit advises that water not be used for drinking, cooking, making juice and infant formula, washing fruits and vegetables, dishwashing or brushing teeth.

Notices about the water situation have been delivered to affected property owners.

Those who rely on wells for drinking water in the area, are not affected by this advisory.

The Ministry of the Environment and City of Kawartha Lakes have oil booms in place to contain the oil, and the oil on surface of the water is being suctioned off as clean up efforts continue.
