Firework safety

Fireworks are a big part of the Victoria day Long Weekend.

City of Kawartha Lakes Fire prevention officer Karl Gleason says consumer fireworks - the ones you can purchase at your local store - can be extremely dangerous so safety should be a priority when using them.

To stop them from smoldering after use, they should be placed in a bucket of water away from your home, for at least 15 minutes, before they are thrown in the garbage.

Gleason adds the practise of youth having Roman candle fights is also very dangerous as the candle's can get caught in a person's clothing and cause severe burns.

If you see such behaviour, you are encouraged to call 911 immediately.
