Special weather statement issued for Tuesday

A special weather statement is in place for the region that could heavily impact travel on Tuesday.

Environment Canada is forecasting significant snow, freezing rain, and strong winds.

"A low pressure system brewing over the Southern Plains States may intensify into a winter storm as it tracks over Southern Ontario Tuesday. Snow is expected to arrive Tuesday morning. The snow may then change to ice pellets and freezing rain for a few hours Tuesday before changing back to snow by Tuesday night as colder air arrives in the wake of the low pressure system."

Snowfall and ice pellets could amount to between 5 and 15 cm, along with ice buildup from freezing rain, but Environment Canada says the snowfall amount could be higher if the freezing rain does not happen.

Blowing snow may also impact visibility as strong winds are expected.

The snow is expected to switch to flurries on Wednesday.
