Police asking for public's help in submerged vehicle fatality

Police are still trying to piece together what happened when an SUV plummeted into the icy South Saugeen River in Ayton over the weekend.

West Grey Police received several calls on Saturday, December 29th, just after 4pm about the vehicle speeding through town and were dispatched to Victoria Street.

Upon arrival they determined that an older tan coloured SUV had driven into the river.

About an hour and a half later they recovered the body of a deceased male on the edge of the river.

He's been identified as 24 year old Gregory Steven Glenn McTavish of Wingham.

On Monday, December 31st, West Grey Police in partnership with the Durham and Ayton Firefighters along with the OPP dive team, Air Unit and the Hanover Water Rescue Team successfully located a Grey 2006 Pontiac Torrent with license plate #CFCM308 approximately one kilometer from the point of entry.

The vehicle is currently submerged twenty feet deep and is not visible from air or from the river banks.

No one else was found inside the submerged vehicle which will remain in the water until a safe opportunity presents itself for removal.
