West side road closures begin

Work was expected to start today, Thursday May 2, on the "Horseshoe" Watermain Upgrade project in Owen Sound. 

The work will include:

  • Replacing existing watermain in the 900 Block of 2nd Avenue West, 900 Block of 3rd Avenue West and the 200 block of 9th Street West.
  • Installing new watermain in the 900 Block of 1st Avenue East

The work is required to provide adequate water supply for domestic use and fire protection for the future and during the 10th Street Bridge reconstruction in 2019/2020.

During construction, the “Horseshoe” roads will be closed to traffic and open to local and residential traffic. 

On Monday, May 6 as part of this work the entire 10th Street West hill will be closed from 2nd to 6th Avenues West.

The closure will begin at 7:00AM, the road is expected to reopen by 10:00PM.

Detour 1 (truck traffic) will begin at 10th Street West & Alpha Street and rerouted:

  • Alpha Street to 14th Street West
  • Easterly to 2nd Avenue West
  • Back to 10th Street West 


Detour 2 will begin at 10th Street West & 8th Avenue West and rerouted:


  • Southerly on 8th Avenue West
  • Easterly on 9th Street West to 2nd Avenue West
  • Back to 10th Street West

Its all part of the major $7.5 million bridge project expected to start later this fall and wrap up at the end of next year.  

Notification of the closures will be posted on social media and on Municipal 511.
