The Impossibility of Alma Deutscher
We cannot explain what you are about to hear.
Science doesn’t know enough about the brain to make sense of Alma. - 60 Minutes/CBS
Alma Deutscher is an accomplished British composer in the classical (music) style; a virtuoso of the piano and the violin.
She is 12 years old.
We’re not talking about a cute kid you've seen on YouTube who can match rock musicians note-for-note.
At the age of 10 she composed an opera!! - Every note for every singing part and every instrument. It must come from the ether, the cosmos, the “upside-down” as the complexity and emotional depth of the music is far beyond her experience….anyone’s experience.
I saw this feature on Sunday night and have been gobsmacked ever since.
As you watch her in the video below, its as if her head explodes with a seemingly endless stream of melodies. Her hands fly over the keys – her violin is an extension of herself. Virtuoso doesn’t seem to be the right word.
After her opera of Cinderalla made its premiere in Vienna, she was compared to the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, another piano & violin virtuoso, who too premiered his own opera in Vienna at the age of 11. When she is told that many consider her to be the "new Mozart", she is confident and audacious enough to proclaim:
“I would prefer to be the first Alma than the second Mozart”.
Watch this. Remember she’s twelve!
