Black Bear Count Underway Across the Region
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is taking steps to find out how many bears live in our province.
Staff will be focusing in on spots where there is concern about the sustainability of the bear population.
Barbed wire hair trap surveys have been set up in several parks including Algonquin Park and Smith Falls
Sardines will draw them in and the bears have to rub up against some barbed wire as they go for the fish.
It then leaves behind a small hair sample that can be sent for DNA analysis.
That data will help determine the number of bears in areas surrounding the survey line and also which are returning bears and which are "unique" bears.
Officials are asking residents not to touch the marked stations if you come across one.
