City Considers Changes to Second Residential Units
The city wants to hear your thoughts on second residential suites.
There is a proposal in the works to allow more second residential units throughout the city and to have more units that are detached from the main house.
Second residential units are also known as basement apartments, granny flats, in-law suites, or coach houses.
Right now, second residential units are only permitted in certain areas of the city, and must be located within the principal home.
Since Kingston has a very low apartment vacancy rate, the city is considering making the changes to create more affordable housing spaces.
Adding a secondary residential unit to a home often creates affordable housing for tenants, and a source of income that can make a property more affordable for its owner.
