You can learn more about ranked ballot voting at open houses this week.

Here in Kingston, the municipal election ballot will include a yes/no question about whether residents want to use a Ranked Ballot Voting system to elect the mayor and district councillors in future municipal elections.

"It's important that voters understand how Ranked Ballot Voting works because their answers to the municipal referendum question will determine how they elect mayor and council going forward," says John Bolognone, city clerk and returning officer.

Find out more about how ranked ballots determine who is elected at one of four open houses including two on Wednesday, September 19.

The first is from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Calvin Park Library, and the second is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  at Sir John A Macdonald Public School.

There will be two more information sessions on Thursday, September 20.

One is at the INVISTA Centre from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., while the other is set for 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Glenburnie Fire hall.

Currently, we use a first past the post approach to elect local officials, so the candidate with the most votes wins.

A Ranked Ballot Voting system would allow residents to rank mayoral and district candidates in order of preference.
