Leaky Barge Removed from Picton Bay

The leaky barge that caused a water emergency in Prince Edward County last week has been safely lifted from Picton Bay.

A boil water advisory remains in effect for Picton and Bloomfield residents as the water treatment plant is still closed and quality tests are ongoing.

The Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada will inspect the barge before it is taken back to Toronto on Monday.

The barge unexpectedly started sinking in the bay a little over a week ago, spilling fuel and hydraulic fluid into the lake.

The contaminants made their way into the local water supply via a nearby pipe, forcing the mayor to declare a water emergency.

Truckloads of potable, fresh water were shipped in to help replenish the local resevoirs.

So far, there has been no timeline for lifting the boil water advisory.
