SIU Investigates after Police Standoff Ends with the Death of a Man
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate the death of a man at a home on Compton Street.
It is still unclear if he was shot by police or himself, but we do know that he was armed with a gun and had barricaded himself inside an apartment at 100 Compton Street on Monday night.
The standoff between the man and Kingston Police started just after 4:00 p.m.
As a precaution, nearby residents were told to stay in their homes.
Around 10:30 p.m., police entered the home and the man, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The area was cleared around midnight and the SIU was called in to investigate.
The incident is believed to be linked to an earlier shooting on Beverley Street, involving a woman who was sent to hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Ontario's Police Watchdog is called in when there is a serious injury, sexual assault allegation, or death in cases involving the police.
Five investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
The SIU are asking anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2314.
They are also urging anyone with video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
