Trans Actors 'Audition' for Scarlett Johansson Roles After Casting Controversy
Trans actors are responding to the latest Scarlett Johansson casting controversy … creatively. The Golden Globe-nominated star is catching heat for taking on a trans role in Rupert Sanders’ Rub & Tug, which follows the true story of Dante "Tex" Gill, who ran massage/prostitution parlors in the 1970s.
Sanders and Johansson were also accused of white-washing when she took on a classically Asian role in Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell.
In a now-viral video, trans stars Justin Chow, Scott Turner Schonefield, D'Lo and Rocco Kayiatos take on some of Johansson’s previous roles, including Samantha in Her, Charlotte in Lost in Translation, Natasha Romanoff in The Avengers and Anna in He's Just Not That Into You.
In the finale, Schonefield nabs Samantha, but wait for it….
"Is this a female role?" he asks someone behind the camera, who replies that yes, it is for a white female.
"Sorry, I'm just having trouble because cis women are actually really marginalized in Hollywood, you know, and I know that there are people who have lived this experience that would bring a lot of authenticity to it and I feel a little weird about taking that from them," he replies. "Thank you so much for the opportunity and no thanks."
