MAYOR OF KYOTO ASKS KIM KARDASHIAN TO RECONSIDER KIMONO TRADEMARK: Kim Kardashian’s decision to name her new line of shapewear Kimono has drawn backlash from near and far. The latest critic is the mayor of Japan’s Kyoto. In a letter posted to the city’s website, Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa writes, "Dear Ms. Kim Kardashian West, I am writing this letter to convey our thoughts on Kimono and ask you to re-consider sic your decision of using the name Kimono in your trademark. Kimono is a traditional ethnic dress fostered in our rich nature and history with our predecessors’ tireless endeavours and studies, and it is a culture that has been cherished and passed down with care in our living. Also, it is a fruit of craftsmanship and truly symbolizes sense of beauty, spirits and values of Japanese."

MELISSA MCCARTHY IN TALKS TO PLAY URSULA: Disney is developing a live-action Little Mermaid movie, and casting is in its final stages. Variety reports that Melissa McCarthy is in early talks to join as Ursula, the villain who terrorizes Ariel. Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) is directing, with Lin-Manuel Miranda providing tunes.
JOHNNY DEPP AND AMBER HEARD SUIT WAITING ON JUDGE’S VACATION: Everyone needs a summer break, even judges! The Blast reports that lawyers for both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were in court in Virginia on Friday to argue over a motion to dismiss the case, which Heard’s attorneys believe belongs in another state. Depp’s team says the domestic violence op-ed she wrote which sparked the $50 million defamation suit appeared in the Washington Post, which is printed in Virginia. The judge said he’ll have an opinion soon, when he returns from vacation. The initial trial date was set for February 3, 2020.
