WRITER AUDREY WELLS DIES AT 58: The screenwriter behind The Truth About Cats & Dogs, George & the Jungle and The Hate U Give has died at age 58. Audrey Wells died Thursday after a long battle with cancer. She also directed and wrote Guinevere (1999), starring Sarah Polley, and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), starring Diane Lane. She is survived by her daughter, Tatiana, and her husband, Brian Larky. "Over the last five and half years, Audrey fought valiantly against her illness and she died surrounded by love," Larky said in a statement. "Even during her fight, she never stopped living, working or traveling, and she never lost her joy, wonder and optimism. She was, simply, the most incredible wife and partner imaginable, and she knew always that she was loved by Tatiana, me, and the friends who were her chosen family." Racial drama The Hate U Give premiered in Atlanta Friday night. NAOMI WATTS TO PLAY GRETCHEN CARLSON IN ROGER AILES SERIES: Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts is set to star opposite Russell Crowe in an eight-episode limited series about Roger Ailes. The Showtime project is based on The Loudest Voice in the Room, a book by Gabriel Sherman that details the Fox head’s last decade of life and the accusations of harassment he faced from Gretchen Carlson (Watts) and many other Fox stars. Ailes died in May of 2017. TIG NOTARO DRAMEDY SET AT ABC: ABC has given a pilot commitment to Thicker Than Water, a one-hour dramedy from One Mississippi maestro Tig Notaro and co-exec producer Cara DiPaolo. The show follows a single mom who returns home for her estranged father’s funeral in Tennessee. JANELLE MONAE JOINS LADY AND THE TRAMP: Janelle Monae joins Disney’s Lady and the Tramp reboot with Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux. She’ll voice the role of Peg, Lady’s friend, played by Thompson. Theroux is voicing Tramp, with Thomas Mann, Kiersey Clemons, Benedict Wong, Ashley Jensen and Yvette Nicole Brown also playing roles. The film will land direct to consumer next year.
