Industry News: Spider-Man, Ansel Elgort, Ryan Reynolds and More!

TRAILER FOR SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE DROPS: Miles Morales has company in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, an animated take created by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The film drops December 14th. The first trailer in June garnered 44 million views, and fans will get more of the storyline—which centers on teen Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) who finds he is the only spidey in his world, as portals to other versions open up—this time around. There’s a past-his-prime Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) who acts as Miles’ mentor, Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Penny Parker and her robot SPDR (voiced by Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). ANSEL ELGORT TO STAR IN STEVEN SPIELBERG’S WEST SIDE STORY: Ansel Elgort has been cast as Tony in Steven Spielberg’s adaption of the Broadway musical West Side Story. Tony Kushner wrote the revival of the 1957 musical, originally written by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim with music by Leonard Bernstein. The filming for West Side Story will begin in the summer of 2019. JAKE GYLLENHAAL DECLARES LOVE FOR RYAN REYNOLDS: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds’ bromance dates back to at least 2017, when they worked on Life together and enchanted the world and each other with their friendship on the film’s promo tour. Their mutual admiration society is still going strong, as Gyllenhaal tells Variety. "I first met Ryan many years ago, and he struck me immediately as quick and warm and thoughtful, a gentleman in an era of foppish putzes, the unlikely love child of Mel Brooks and Dorothy Parkerand Gary Cooper," the 37-year-old began. "He was also taller than me. Against my wishes, we became close friends." He continue, tongue firmly in cheek (we hope!): "What we all want for our friends in this business is for the world to see what we see, and as actors, that only happens in a perfect storm of timing and the full luck. After years of waiting and struggling to fit his unfortunate, pear-shaped physique into the skinny jeans of a conventional romantic lead, Ryan made his own luck with Deadpool." DID HARRY POTTER VIDEO GAME FOOTAGE LEAK? Footage of what appears to be a Harry Potter video game under development was leaked on Reddit Tuesday. The video shows off RPG elements like a character creation screen, and shows a character running in a third-person perspective and making potions. Warner Bros. has since blocked the video. AMAZON ORDERS THE WHEEL OF TIME TO SERIES: Amazon has given a series order to an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time. Amazon Prime will launch the one-hour series in partnership with Sony Pictures (their first collab). The Wheel of Time has sold 90M+ books and is based in a sprawling universe filled with magic that only women can use. The series draws on elements of European and Asian culture. "Developing and producing Robert Jordan’s beloved fourteen-books-series for TV is a big undertaking, and we don’t take it lightly," said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Event Series, Amazon Originals. "We believe that Rafe’s personal connection to the material and soulful writing will resonate with the book’s passionate fans." ALTON BROWN TALKS REVAMPED GOOD EATS: On October 15th, the Cooking Channel is debuting Good Eats: Reloaded, a combination of classic episodes of the original Food Network juggernaut with new footage that addresses holes in host Alton Brown’s research and techniques. He tells Grub Street that he came up with the idea after watching reruns of Season 1 of Good Eats. "I realized, ‘Oh my God, I would do everything different now.’ I kept watching, and I started making notes. I was like, ‘Okay, shows where there are things that I could change, shows where I made mistakes, shows where we now have new information,’ and all of a sudden I had 13 shows that I basically want to redo. And I thought, ‘Well, I don’t want to remake them, what else could I do?’ I’ll reload them. I’ll renovate them." Will you tune in?
