BC Forests Minister Doug Donaldson blames the previous government on the state of the forest industry and says his government is making different choices by asking for local insight into how to shape a prosperous, competitive and culturally sensitive future forest sector.
   
 In May, Vernon based Tolko Industries announced the permanent closure of its sawmill in Quesnel and a reduction from two shifts to one at its Kelowna sawmill as well as a four week shut down of Armstrong and Soda Creek lumber mills due to poor market conditions and uneconomic log costs.

The small community of Fort St. James in Northern BC has declared a state of local financial crisis in the wake of the closure and recent sale of its largest sawmill.
