Cause of Cameron Road Fire Accidental

Kelowna RCMP investigators have determined the cause of a fire that tore through a local townhouse complex last week.

"Combined with evidence gathered through interview with witnesses, we believe that the fire was not criminal in nature," says Corporal Jesse O'Donaghey. "At this time there is information to suggest that the fire may have been accidental and related to smoking."

It took the RCMP longer than anticipated to determine the cause of the fire, as they could not get full access to the building due to safety concerns over structural stability.

Two units were destroyed in the fire, with at least four more damaged.

The fire was reported by a lone RCMP officer in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 3rd. Before calling in emergency crews, the officer used his police siren to alert any residents still inside the building to the blaze.
