Chase Wine Masterworks III

Friday, January 25, 2019 - 7:30pm

Melody in the hands of Mozart knows no equal. His prolific gift for spinning a tune of simplicity and perfection is legendary. 250 years after his death he still inspires through his own music and through contemporary composers like Michael Colgrass. We celebrate Mozart’s genius with two of his latest works: his final symphony and his final concerto written for a brand new instrument of his day, the clarinet, performed by our own principal, Erin Fung. Both of these works showcase Mozart’s mercurial ability to portray gorgeous lyricism and absolute joy!

Joie De Vivre!

Friday, Feburary 15, 2019 - 7:30pm

The stage will be brimming with energy as we present our annual Side by Side performance with the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra. The French composers we have chosen for this concert are renowned for bringing stories to life in brilliant colour. Inspired by Greek Myth, German Fairy tale and the grandeur of the European ballroom, this music will sparkle one moment and leave you breathless the next. The Okanagan’s own Jaeden Izik Dzurko, fresh from his Julliard studies, will bring two piano concerti to life: Penticton composer Ernst Schneider’s sumptuous Romantic Concerto and Chopin’s glorious Grande polonaise. Joie indeed!

Back by popular demand, Lara St. John returns to light up our stage in one of the most exhilarating concertos written for the violin. Lara studied this work in St. Petersburg, and her indescribable energy will blaze through this tour de force. This Concerto and the Festive Overture by Shostakovich show off this Russian master at his most resplendent. We pair these works with the well-loved Firebird Suite for a musical evening of colour and radiance.

Asian Fusion

Friday, May 11, 2019 - 7:30pm

We celebrate Asian heritage month with music of exceptional power and beauty. The classical western orchestra blends with musical traditions and instruments of Asia to create a fusion of sound that is new and exciting. The erhu (Chinese violin) is at the heart of the beautiful and haunting music created by Tan Dun for Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which will soar in the hands of Nicole Ge Li. Tokara Taiko from Japan fuses with the OSO for music that is percussive and powerful.
