Chip bags now recyclable

Recycle BC has launched a pilot program that expands the types of plastics that depots will accept.

Cynthia Coates with the Regional District of Central Okanagan says Recycle BC has created a new category called "Other Flexible Packaging."

“That crinkly plastic that we (used to) tell people not to recycle.  Chips bags, wrapping around pasta, cheese slices, bubble wrap, padded envelopes, netted produce bags that come around your avocados and onions, candy bar wrappers, granola bar wrappers,” explained Coates.

In Kelowna, the Columbia Bottle Depots on Kirschner Road, Dease Road and Saint Paul Street started taking the additional recyclables on June 1st.  In West Kelowna, Boucherie Bottle Depot on Kyle Road, and Planet Earth Recycling on Industrial Road.

Any depots that aren’t currently taking the new items will have their facilities set up to do so by January 1st, 2019.
