Early morning fire destroys building
A commercial building on McCurdy Road near Highway 97 was completely destroyed after a fire broke out shortly after 5 AM Monday morning.
42 fire personnel were called to the scene, and were able to contain the fire to that one building and prevent it from spreading to others.
Platoon Captain Kelly Stephens says the smoke and 6-meter high flames weren't the only hazards that fire crews had to deal with.
"We needed a defensive attack due to the fact that we had huge power lines in the vicinity," says Stephens. "We were concerned with our ladder trucks and the safety of our crews, so Fortis was brought in immediately in order to de-energize the lines."
Several personnel are still at the scene investigating the cause, and are using an excavator to clear out the rubble.
