Finlay Creek Wildfire 1,500 hectares in size

The BC Wildfire Service says there was no significant growth in the Finlay Creek Wildfire overnight – but they were able to get a better estimate of its size.

Fire Information Officer Heather Rice says the blaze covers 1,500 hectares - with most of the fire’s growth happening Saturday because of the high winds.

Today (Monday), Rice says 18 firefighters, heavy equipment, three helicopters and 4 air tankers will be working on the fire which is located 7.5-kilometres southwest of Peachland.

Overnight, fire crews were able to establish 6-kilometres of guard on the south flank – and structural protections have been put in place on the north end of Garnet Valley.

There are reports of building’s being impacted, but the fire is still too active for an accurate assessment.

Rice says the Finlay Creek wildfire is a Rank 3 – with smoke, open flame and some tree-top candling.

55 properties in the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen have been evacuated and many more are on Alert – a list of properties on Order and Alert can be found at rdos.bc.ca or cordemergency.ca.
