Frustrated passengers abusing workers on BC Ferries
A shocking number of workers on BC Ferries say they have been abused by frustrated or unruly passengers.
"I would say that half the people surveyed experienced mental health issues from the abuse that they received,"
BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union rep Dan Kimmerly says they more protection and support from the corporation. Specifically, they want a zero tolerance policy enforced.
"In some instances, BC Ferries management has rewarded or allowed people on the sailing. We want management to enforce the zero tolerance policy going forward."
Kimmerly says even yesterday, somebody drove straight at a worker while exiting a ferry, swerving at the last minute to avoid hitting them.
The corporation says the zero tolerance policy is being enforced. Clearly, the union disagrees.
